Why Your Income Tax Refund Is Delayed: Key Reasons and How to Check Status Online
It’s been more than two and a half months since the passing of the income tax return (ITR) due date, and taxpayers are still awaiting their tax refunds. Most of the experts say the key reason behind the delay is technical or procedural mistakes.
Generally, the tax department releases tax refunds within 3 to 4 weeks of filing a return; however, refunds with higher amounts usually take longer than low-value refunds. Hence, the tax department has suggested that all taxpayers who filed their returns this year keep checking their refund status at the official e-filing portal of Income Tax. This financial year, 2024-25, the statutory due date for filing ITRs was September 16, 2025. This was an extended date; in the past, the department had extended the due date for filing returns twice, once from July 31 to September 15 and then to September 16, 2025, and this was the final extension.
